Lehua Cosma is the Winner of the 2008 Tiny Malaikini Mea Kokua Award

Lehua Cosma (middle) is this year’s winner of the Tiny Malaikini Mea Kokua Award. She stands with Lynette Malaikini, widow of “Tiny” Malaikini, and Sorelle Malaikini, his granddaughter. The award is given annually to a Hana resident who has worked selflessly for the people of Hana.

My Uncle Boy, I miss you and your aloha that you shared so generously with me. I know where you are now the Lau Lau’s are no ka oi, but save Pani and me some because we’ll be hungry when we arrive.

The pic above is from March 8th 1997 and is of Boy, me and my bruddah Pani. Besides being bruddahs we were business partners running our Tiny’s of Maui local food restuarant in Lahaina.

I loved Boy and I’m in pain that I can’t make the trip to be with his o’hana over the next few days as they lay him to rest. Only comforting thought is that he is with his wife once again…

This is a scan of my KPOA bumper sticker Boy gave me in the mid 90’s. I never could bring myself to put it on my car because cars don’t last forever. But we do… in heaven and in the memories of friends and loved ones.

Poom poom!

Hard to believe it’s been 23 years since we met down at Hana Bay my bruddah Pani. Time goes by too fast, but my time sure has been better having met you out on the pier that fateful day.

I know you’re hurting over Boy’s death and I wish I could be there with you and Boy’s o’hana, but sadly it’s not possible for me to make it there right now.

Please have a Happy Birthday and make sure it’s your best year yet! We never know how many more God will let us share with family and friends here on Earth.

Uncle Bill’s Lunch Wagon

I met Uncle Bill Kamai and his wife on my first trip to Hana back in 1985. He is absolutely one of the nicest men on this Earth. He’s a very quiet, very proud man. Also winner of the Tiny Malaikini Award in 1996.

He provided the grinds for nearly every gathering I ever had the honor of attending. His food is ono and my Hawaiian o’hana and friends swear by it.

If you find yourself in Hana be sure to find Uncle Bill’s lunch wagon down at Hana Bay. And order yourself some Hawaiian food! You can eat the other junk when you return back to the mainland. Tell Uncle Bill that Kawika sends his best and I’m missing his ono food!

(I’m sure I have a picture of Uncle Bill’s lunch wagon somewhere and when I find it I’ll add it…).
